So, there is this thing that writers say all the time when they are stuck. “I have writer’s block.” For many years I had no sympathy and would think or even say, “writer’s block is bullshit”, but I don’t believe that anymore. It’s a real thing. Sometimes we just get stuck, our muse is out drinking or whatever, we have no ideas coming in.

Well, it feels like that’s true, usually, it’s other things pushing their way forward. How to pay the bills, what if I get rejected on the story that is already out there, I’m tired, this story isn’t working, etc.. then, we procrastinate—and as writers, we are really good at that.

I find that when I get stuck, I refuse to call it writer’s block, when I’m stuck I find that if I force myself to write something it helps me get back to what I’m doing. Sometimes, I’ll work on another project, or even just getting out of the flat helps me a lot. Going to the gym helps me, hanging out with my crit group or friends helps as well.

I have posted just a few tips that work for me that you can print out and post-maybe they will help you too!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. Do you get it? How do you get unstuck?

Don’t forget to tune into my YouTube channel and subscribe–this week, I am talking about this very thing in a short fun video!

Happy first day of the new week—because yesterday was a holiday—I hope you did something fun.

My husband and I went to see the new Ryan Reynolds movie—Detective Pikachu and while we totally enjoyed it, I found myself wondering why I didn’t really care about the characters, especially the main character.

Did you see it? What did you think?

We also watched all of DEAD TO ME—and that was brilliant in every way.

The characters were so well developed. There was no telling-everything we found out we did in the right way-they ever used flashbacks effectively. Every episode ended with what I call a page turner (even in TV shows)—it made us binge instead of waiting for the next day. The dialogue was all perfect.

***THIS IS A SHOW TO WATCH TO LEARN craft of storytelling. I can’t recommend it enough.

***Warning if the F word offends you, then it’s probably not the show for you though.

Have you seen it?

So, I’m a day late in posting my goal post for the week-which usually I put out on Mondays. But, since I took most of the day off to recharge I figured that a lot of you did as well.

Now, it’s time to write down those goals!!!

Happy writing!!!

writinggoals.jpgHappy Monday!! Yay new week, new possibilities! I love Mondays.

What are your writing goals for the week?
Mine are:
1. Write/revise in the YA every day for at least TWO hours.
2. Shoot some videos for my new YT channel
3. Do nothing for a few hours every day to recharge.
It’s such a great practice to write down your goals and posting them on social media is even better because then you not only have a community of others, you can also be held accountable.
Sometimes we don’t reach our goals and then we feel bad, but we shouldn’t, it’s normal and it’s okay to shift them if you need to.
I invite you to post your goals in the comments and or on social media.
As well, I’d love to see you in my new Story Concierge FB group.

I just got back from an SCBWI conference in Northern California. It was amazing, inspiring, and FUN.

I personally LOVE going to conferences but for some people, especially introverts, they can be terrifying.

Last week I posted some quick tips, and so I thought I would add a few more as it’s conference season; well, honestly, there are writing conferences all year round but many people go in the summer. A lot of writers who I know are teachers so summer just makes sense as they have some time off.

Here we go!!!

BTW in my new STORY CONCIERGE COURSE coming up fall 2019–-registration coming in summer 2019—I will be going in depth with this topic as well I will have a series of FREE videos on YouTube as well, so please jump over to my new website and sign up to be a VIP. You will get FREE content from me, with no catches, no requirements to buy, just subscribe and that’s it. Who doesn’t LOVE freebies?? And when my YouTube channel launches in June I will be posting videos WEEKLY with FREE TIPS for writers. My goal is to help you be the best you can be,  but most importantly–HAVE AMAZING CONFIDENCE while doing it.

www.jundaniebean.com

Okay as promised.

WRITING CONFERENCE TIPS continued from last week.

  1. Wear COMFORTABLE shoes. This is a must as you walk a lot between sessions, keynotes, lunch, and bathroom breaks.
  2. Always bring layers. Some rooms are super hot, like Florida hot & stuffy and some are a quick trip to the Arctic, so be prepared.
  3. Snacks are good–just make them quiet–no one wants to sit next to the write wolfing down a bag of crunchy chips.
  4. Bring notepads and pens. You can bring your iPad/tablet or laptop but most rooms don’t have it set up for everyone to be charging and also the tap tap tap of a keyboard can disturb others around you. I always suggest taking it old school during sessions. You may find that you retain more info that way too. Give it a shot
  5. Be on time, or early if you can to your sessions.

That’s five for this week and be sure to share this and come back for more next week. I’m going to be focusing on conferences this month.

Thank you for following, sharing, liking and of course HAPPY WRITING & conferencing!!

GoT LAST NIGHT Season 8 April 28th

Thoughts on last night’s episode?? Did you like it? Why or why not? Did her actions speak to character or plot? Tell me!!

Purely from a storytelling pov, I think liking anything based on gender isn’t good.
If you loved last night’s GoT because it was well written and the story was well executed that is one thing, but if you liked it just because a certain female was badass that is a problem–same with Endgame.
Female characters are doing badass things these days more and more just to fill a need but aren’t serving the story.
That to me is just as wrong as not having them.
I didn’t see the GoT episode but I know what happened and I have heard mixed reviews.
When writing always avoid anything that starts with an idea in your head, “wouldn’t it be cool if…” and then literally anything that follows that. Please, your story and characters deserve better.
